Jan Wahl was born on April 1, 1933, in Columbus, Ohio. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Cornell University in 1953. He spent two years of graduate study in Copenhagen, Denmark, from 1954-1955 and finished his Master's of Arts degree at the University of Michigan in 1958.
